The subtraction is the whole calculation: BA long-haul awards routinely add $300–600+ in carrier-imposed surcharges, so a raw cash-÷-Avios figure overstates value. Avios value lives in short-haul partner bookings and off-peak premium cabins; avoid BA-metal long-haul economy, where surcharges eat most or all of the value.
