Value per mile = (cash fare − award taxes and fees) ÷ miles × 100. The all-in cost prices the miles at the program's baseline valuation: taxes + miles × baseline. True savings = cash fare − all-in cost, which can go negative — most calculators report cash − taxes instead, valuing the miles at $0. Baselines are editorial estimates in two lanes — typical (median achievable, the Frequent Miler / NerdWallet methodology) and maximum (optimized transfers, the TPG / Upgraded Points methodology) — and the verdict judges against typical with a ±10% toss-up band.
